Tehran, Aug 1, - One of the interim friday prayer leaders of Tehran Ayatollah Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani said here at Tehran university's central campus that the US dreams on Iran never came true.
Speaking for thousands of worshipers, Rafsanjani made the comment regarding the last month limited student unrests in Tehran and a few other major Iranian cities, condemning the hasty support of various top ranking US officials for them.
"the White House had dreamt sweet dreams, quite the opposite of which met reality here in Iran," said the head of Iran's Expediency Council.
Ayatollah Rafsanjani added, "the Americans assumed they had supporters in Iran who would pour into the streets any time they wished, but despite their various calls for the continuation of the unrests, the (Iranian) people made them lose hope.
" focussing on the defeat of the various US policies in the middle east, the Rafsanjani said, "the riots erupted in a few cities basedon the US will by certain groups of hooligans, proved that against their belief, the islamic system is quite strong and popular, and despite their assumptions, what they (the Americans) say does not sell well here.
" Iran's former president referring to the US president George W. Bush's thursday comments during a press conference, said, "Mr. Bush has said that the Americans can solve their problems with Iran through peaceful methods, but regardless of such comments, we would keep paving our own path, stressing on our detente policy." Emphasizing on Iran's strong will to take peaceful advantage of the nuclear energy, Rafsanjani said, "our nation is neither an opportunist one, nor the kind to resort to the use of the nuclear power for military purposes, and making other types of weapons of mass destruction.
" he further reiterated, "yet, we will not yield to others' intentions to blackmail us, and are ready to sacrifice our lives in our struggle against colonialism.
" Elsewhere in his second sermon, pointing out that in order to exert its hegemony around the globe, the United States has resorted to "the quite malicious policy of globalizing and unipolarizing" ofthe world, he said, "the US does these things partly in order to solve its internal problems."
Ayatollah Rafsanjani added, "those problems include security and economic conflicts with which the united states has been entangled, and the US policy makers assumed by creating an intelligence atmosphere of excitement, horror, and terror around the globe they could revive the era of colonialism and black mailing, thus solving their own economic problems."
Hashemi Rafsanjani said, "pursuing that line, the Americans have ept spreading news to disturb the world public opinion with the break of each new day, among which we can refer to their accusation that Iran is after acquiring nuclear weapons, and other weapons of mass destruction.
The head of the Expediency Council said that all colonialist moves ade by the United States' currently can be interpreted based on that pattern, adding, "yet, such policies cannot be going on for a very long period, and are also hazardous for the Americans, as well, the signs of whose defeat are observed both inside and outside their country."
Arguing that (US president George W.) Bush has exceeded Clinton's dual containment policy regarding Iran and Iraq in the middle east, having in mind intentions to change regimes in this part of the world,he said, "the initial signs of defeat of such policies can already be observed in Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran, Palestine, and even England and the United States."
Rafsanjani said, "in Afghanistan, the harsh regime of Taliban, that had exerted its hegemony only on a limited part of that countrywas annihilated, but they have not been successful in fighting against terrorism, or the narcotic drugs trafficking."
He set example of the UN secretary general Kofi Annan's recent comments, who has argued that the security condition in Afghanistan is awfully terrible today.
The Tehran interim friday prayer leader added, "yesterday (on thursday), a committee at British house of commons in its official report announced that the wars in Afghanistan Ind iraq have not been successful in dealing with the problem of international terrorism effectively, and the threats due to the terrorists' attacks, particularly by Al Qaeda sympathizes, have even increased."
he added, in Iraq, too, the situation is the same. the Ba'thist regime of Saddam has been toppled and the Iraqi army has been dissolved. "but today, over three months after those events, and amid the presence of 150 thousand US military forces in Iraq, plus hundreds of most advanced fighter planes, and forces from several other countries that support the us policies and forces, they havebeen urged to confess that they are faced with acute security problems," added Rafsanjani.
The Ayatollah said, "today the US citizens have the nightmare of having got entangled in another Vietnam, and the US politicians are worried lest their forces in Iraq under severe psychological conditions, would attack ordinary people with no good excuse."he added, "life for the Iraqi people, too, is going through an era of suspension in the middle of nowhere today, and for the foreseeable future, and the Americans have been pushing for the military presence of other nations in Iraq."
Rafsanjani said, "in Palestine, the 'roadmap', that was proposed simultaneously with the Iraq crisis, led towards a dead-end at the beginning of its path, incidentally by the Israelis themselves. "despite (the US president George W.) Bush's discontent, (the Israeli prime minister Ariel) Sharon kept on constructing Israel's security wall, and continued the expansion of the illegal jewish townships inside Palestinian territories, and worst of all, he gifted Bush a map of the great Israel (from the Nile to the Euphrates)."
Elsewhere in his second sermon, Rafsanjani referred to the anniversary of the US atomic attacks against Hiroshima and Nagasaki, adding, "the Americans who committed that big crime, now have the largest nuclear arsenal in the world, and have permitted Israel, and many other countries in this region to manufacture nuclear weapons.
"the head of the Expediency Council regarded the US double policies regarding the nuclear activities of Iran as a big joke, arguing,"many countries in our region, including Russia,Pakistan, India and Israel, are equipped with nuclear weapons today." he added, "we cannot pursue the policy of acquiring nuclear weapons due to our religious, humanitarian, and ethical beliefs, just as we did not resort to chemical weapons during our war with Iraq, even though our enemy did so to a vast extent."
Further stressing that Iran is not after acquiring nuclear weapons, Rafsanjani said, "while a country like Iran, with a civilization far exceeding that of the United States wishes to benefit from the advantages of the nuclear science for strictly peaceful purposes, the Americans have now raised great hue and cry over the matter, instigating new accusations against us each day." "such double standards that are many in US foreign policy have made the world politicians lose trust in US policy makers,: argued Rafsanjani.
