RFS condemns filmmaker's detention
09:41:48 .
Paris, Aug 2 - The Paris-based Reporters Sans Frontiers (RSF; reporters without borders) here on Friday issued a communique condemning the month-long arrest of the Iranian documentary filmmakers by the US military forces in occupied Iraq.

In RSF's communique, it is said, "our organization demands that the United States would offer a comprehensive explanation about the status of the two arrested Iranian documentary fimmakers in Iraq, and the justification behind their arrest.

" It adds, "we hereby ask the US-appointed ruler in Iraq, Paul Bremer, to clarify the exact cause of the Iranian journalists' arrest and to stop offering general justifications, such as being involved in activities other than journalism."

The communique reads, "the US ruler of Iraq is held responsible for the security and well being of Saeid Abutaleb and Soheil Karimi, whom the Americans have vaguely accused of violating the security of Iraq and thereby arrested."

It adds, "during the recent days we have been witness to the acceleration of harsh attitude of the US military forces towards foreign journalists in Iraq, that is not justifiable."

The RSF argues, "it is up to the US and British occupiers in Iraq to prove how these documentary filmmakers have possibly violated the security rules in Iraq."

Saeid Abutaleb and Soheil Karimi, two Iranian journalists working for the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) channel 2 TV network, were arrested by the US forces in Iraq on July 1, 2003 in southern parts of Iraq, while taking a documentary films about the living conditions of the Iraqi citizens.
