Tehran, Aug 2 - An earthquake registering 4.2 on the open-ended Richter-scale rocked vast parts in the southeast of Iran's Fars province, on Friday evening.
The quake occurred at 16:24 local time (11:54 GMT), the seismological base of the Tehran University's Geophysics Institute reported.
The epicenter of the quake is reported to be 233 kms to the southeast of the Fars province's Shiraz city.
The said region has been suffering from lingering drought for five consecutive years now, and many villages there have been evacuated as a result.
There is no report available yet on the possible property damage or loss of life as a result of the tremor.
Iran sits on some of the world's active seismic faultlines and tremors of a mild magnitude are almost a daily occurrence.
Since 1991, at least 17,000 Iranians have died as a result of earthquakes.
