London, Sept 22 - Foreign Secretary Jack Straw was flying to New York Monday to continue talks in securing a new UN resolution on running post-war Iraq.
His visit follows Prime Minister Tony Blair attending last Saturday's Berlin summit with German chancellor and Gerhard Schroeder and French President Jacques Chirac that showed the continuing deep rifts over the role of the UN in handing over power to the Iraqis.
The United States circulated a draft text for a resolution earlier this month but the five permanent members of the Security Council have failed to agree on the timetable and manner of a transfer of power in Iraq.
Chirac is due to hold talks with US President George W Bush on Tuesday, the same day he is due to address the General Assembly.
Bush is also meeting Schroeder on Wednesday.
The differences over Iraq were revealed last week to extend to the British cabinet, after it was reported that Straw appealed to Blair not to proceed with joining the US military invasion on the eve of the war in March.
