Brussels, Sept 22 - The European Union's former trade chief has warned the developing world that its show of strength during the Cancun World Trade Organisation summit will backfire.
In an interview with the website 'EUpolitix,' Lord Brittan said their hardline stance and refusal to negotiate "was actually counterproductive."
It may be wonderful for them to show the European Union and the United States that they are advancing, but it is a short term victory, he said.
If the impasse that brought down the cancun meeting last weekend continues "there will be no liberalisation benefitting developing countries" warned Brittan.
And with the multilateral process in Limbo, the US will instead forge ahead with separate 'bilateral' trade liberalisation deals "with countries that are intrinsically friendly to it."
And that, the former EU trade commissioner concluded, "will be very, very bad news for everybody."
