US troops attacked in Afghanistan
05:00:24 .
Afghanistan, Sept 22 - US troops fought two groups of rebels at the weekend along southeast Afghanistan's insurgency-hit border with Pakistan, a US military spokesman said Monday.

The mountainous border region is at the frontline of a resurgence by Taliban fighters, who have claimed control of at least four districts in the area and vowed to organise further"resistance" against US-led forces, almost two years after US-led forces toppled their regime.

US soldiers exchanged fire with a group of up to five militants near their base at Shkin on the border in Paktika, one of the most troubled provinces, major Richard Sater told reporters at the coalition's Bagram air base headquarters.

The fighters, who were not identified, immediately retreated,"he said.

Resurgent Taliban and their allies from Al-Qaeda and supporters of renegade former premier Gulbuddin Hekmatyar are blamed for an upswing in bloody attacks on US and Afghan troops, aid workers and officials.
