The President commends athletes

Tehran, June 22 - While praising Iranian athletes and champions in last year's sport events, President Mohammad Khatami stated that the sports should contribute to the rule of law in the society.
President Khatami made the remarks in a meeting Saturday with a group of Iranian athletes in the National Olympic Academy premises.
The President said everyone should abide by the laws and tolerate others as the athletes respect the rules of sport and accept in humbleness the views of the arbitrators in tournaments.
He thanked all officials of the sports circles for their great task and relentless efforts to add to the glory of the nation invarious sport events and occasions.
He recognized that the requirements of the sport stadiums and athletes associations were beyond what the government has provided for them.
He encouraged the athletes to get involved in the constructive drives in the country.
He referred to Takhti, a legend in Iran's wresting, and said Takhti was great not only because of his many successes in sportfields but also because of his active presence in the society.
He said, for example, Takhti once brought his humanitarian aid to the victims of a deadly earthquake that shook Boin Zahra.
He said Takhti was a person who resisted destructive political tendencies and movements in his age.
The President repeated his admiration of the success of Iranian wrestlers who were crowned as champions in the 16th Asian freestyle and greco-roman events ended in New Delhi, India, on June 8.
The Iranian freestyle wrestling team gained six golds and one silver and its total points reached 69 and the greco-roman wrestling side snatched one gold, three silver, and two bronze medals, getting 60 points in the event.
