Tokyo, Aug 1 - Japanese automaker Nissan said Friday it will work with controlling shareholder Renault SA of France to jointly develop eight types of engines by 2010 for new vehicle models.
Nissan motor co. will oversee the development of gasoline engines, while renault will manage the development of diesel engines, said a Nissan spokeswoman.
"Both firms will focus on the areas they excel in," she said. "By jointly developing engines, we believe we can cut development costs and hope for some synergy effects," she said.
The companies made the joint development decision as environmental regulations on engines are set to become tougher in Europe, the United States and Japan, she said.
