Taipei, Aug 3 - The 34th International Physics Olympiad opened in Taipei on Sunday with 239 high school students from 54 countries participating. President Chen Shui-Bian opened the contest, which runs through August 9. During the week-long contest, participants will work on written tests and laboratory tests and will win awards according to the total points garnered by each country's team. The contest was organized by the National Taiwan Normal University with assistance from the Education Ministry. Because of the war in Iraq and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome, or SARS, the number of participating countries is 12 fewer than last year. China is boycotting the event because it is opposed to the game's being held in Taiwan, which Beijing regards as its breakaway province. The International Olympiad is known as the olympic games for physics. There are also international chemistry and mathematics olympiads.
